Lithuania has decided not to transfer Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers, which are in service with the army of the republic, to Ukraine, Defense Minister Arvydas Anushauskas said. The reason why Vilnius changed its mind is not specified.
“A decision was made that we will supply Ukraine with ammunition for howitzers,” the minister said (quote according to TASS). According to him, Vilnius’ assistance to Kyiv currently exceeds 640 million euros in monetary terms, of which 232 million euros went to military assistance.
At the end of October, the commander of the Lithuanian armed forces, Lieutenant General Valdemaras Rupshis, said that the country could not give Ukraine its howitzers and NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized Western military assistance to Ukraine. In this regard, back in April, Moscow sent a note of protest to all countries, including the United States. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the United States is trying to drag out the conflict by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Also, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov pointed to Washington’s economic interest in supplies. According to him, in this way the United States seeks to “skim the cream” against the backdrop of the current situation.
