Line Renaud continues her fight to “legalize active assistance in dying”

The popular singer, who celebrated her 94th birthday on July 4, co-signed a platform with MP Olivier Falorni in which she calls on parliamentarians to recognize the right to euthanasia.

With Olivier Falorni, she bluntly denounces the lack of courage of French political leaders in the face of this problem: “By refusing so far to legalize any active assistance in dying, France has shown great hypocrisy. Faced with the absence of an institutional solution, two types of response have emerged: exile in neighboring countries to die there and the practice of clandestine euthanasia in our country. Worse, takes the podium. Two-thirds of these clandestine euthanasias would be carried out without the knowledge of the patients and their relatives.“.
A call to the President of the Republic
The right to leave serenely, without having to undergo medical relentlessness, seems to be the most important reason for Line Renaud’s commitment: “Why want to stay until the end when you know that you are condemned in the short term and that your physical and mental suffering will be, despite medical progress and the dedication of caregivers, refractory to any therapeutic treatment?“.
There is a country in Europe where euthanasia has been decriminalized for twenty years, it is our neighbor Belgium. This choice has, for Olivier Falorni and Line Renaud, an example value. They point this out in their open letter: “The legalization of euthanasia in Belgium has not led to its proliferation. On the other hand, it has made it possible to improve monitoring and control of it, because it was already in use there too, illegally.“.

The deputies during the previous legislature had already debated on April 8, 2021 on the “right to a free and chosen end of life“. Line Renaud and Olivier Falorni now believe that it is time to have the new assembly pass a law that would clearly govern this question, which is as scientific as it is ethical. They ask Emmanuel Macron to respect one of his campaign promises when on March 31, he declared: “I am in favor of moving towards the Belgian model“.
