Police confiscated over 1.5 million euros in cash from the European Parliament (EP) during an investigation into corruption around the World Cup in Qatar. The Le Soir newspaper writes about this, citing law enforcement sources.
The publication also published a photo taken by the police as a result of searches, in which you can see wads of money. It is noted that during the searches in the house of the ex-deputy of the European Parliament, Pier Antonio Panzeri, 600,000 euros were seized. If you add this amount to the money found at the place of residence of the dismissed Vice-President of the EP Eva Caili and her partner Francesco Giorgi, you get more than 1.5 million euros.
Kylie arrested December 10 in the case of corruption around the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In addition, her father was detained in Belgium, in whose briefcase a large amount of cash was found. During searches of Kylie’s home, valuables were also found, which, presumably, she received from the Qatari authorities.
A lawyer for the former EP vice president said that Kylie did not receive bribes from Qatar. According to the defense, the deputy insists on his innocence. Earlier today, members of the EP voted for Kylie’s resignation.
On December 11, AFP, citing a court source, reported that Belgian authorities had arrested four suspects in a corruption case. Their names are not revealed. Those arrested are suspected of taking bribes and gifts given to them to influence the decisions of the EP.
Commenting on the arrest of the EP deputies, EU diplomat Josep Borrell expressed concern. “I am not a judge, the legal process is ongoing. Reports of this cause deep concern, especially for me, as a former President of the European Parliament, ” declared he. Borrell stressed that the employees of the EU foreign service have nothing to do with this case.
