Lavrov will discuss the settlement on Karabakh with the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet with his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan tomorrow, July 25, in Moscow. About it reported press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. It is specified that the parties will discuss ways to de-escalate the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Particular attention will be paid to the preparation of a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan. <...> The ministers will also discuss other key tracks of the Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization, including the unblocking of transport communications in the region, the delimitation of the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, contacts between the public and experts, and the launch of a dialogue between parliamentarians,” the message says.

It is also planned to discuss “topical issues of the Russian-Azerbaijani and Russian-Armenian agendas in the political, trade, economic and humanitarian spheres,” the representative office concluded.

July 15 MFA informedthat Russia is ready to organize a trilateral meeting of foreign ministers in Moscow to discuss ways to implement the agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan. They also noted that after the meeting in Moscow, a Russian-Azerbaijani-Armenian summit could be organized, at which the parties would sign a peace treaty.

On May 25, Pashinyan and Aliyev, through the mediation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussed relations between the two countries in the Kremlin, but did not adopt a joint statement at the end of the day. At the same time, as Aliyev noted, after Armenia’s statements on the recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, the issue of agreeing on the points of the peace treaty will go “much easier.”

The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh escalated in September 2020, when hostilities began in the region between the military of Armenia and Azerbaijan. As a result, a tripartite statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

However, in 2022, a new escalation took place in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, when the State Border Guard Service of Azerbaijan installed a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, on the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia.
