Lavrov: US is creating a “free Syrian army” with the participation of IS militants

The United States is creating on the territory of Syria from ISIS militants (the organization is recognized as a terrorist organization and banned on the territory of the Russian Federation) and other terrorist groups the so-called “army of free Syria”, declared Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“According to our information, the Americans have begun to create the so-called “free Syrian army” in the vicinity of Syrian Raqqa with the participation of representatives of local Arab tribes, ISIS militants and other terrorist organizations,” he said.
According to Lavrov, the United States expects to use these militants against the Syrian authorities to destabilize the situation in the country. This issue was discussed at a meeting of the head of the military departments of the Russian Federation of Syria, Turkey and Iran, the parties agreed on “joint actions in this direction,” the minister added.
Today in Moscow passes meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Russia, Syria, Turkey and Iran – Sergey Lavrov, Faisal Mikdad, Mevlut Cavusoglu and Hossein Amir Abdollahian. At the meeting, the ministers will discuss issues on the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, as well as the fight against terrorism, Cavusoglu said earlier.
At the end of April, talks were also held in the Russian capital between the defense ministers of the Russian Federation, Iran, Syria and Turkey. During the meeting, they discussed issues of strengthening security in Syria, the return of refugees and the normalization of Syrian-Turkish relations.
The aggravation of relations between Ankara and Damascus took place against the background of the beginning of the conflict in Syria in 2011. In this regard, a large number of Syrian refugees arrived in Turkey. The countries severed diplomatic relations in 2012, when Türkiye supported the armed opposition.
On May 7, Arab foreign ministers approved the return of Syria to the Arab League (LAS). Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation welcomed this is a decision because it will contribute to overcoming the consequences of the Syrian crisis.
