The Russian Foreign Minister, along with other participants in the G20 summit, laid wreaths at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial in New Delhi. On behalf of President Vladimir Putin, Sergei Lavrov heads the Russian delegation.
The heads of state stood along the perimeter of the memorial and paid tribute to Gandhi in silence. The ceremony was broadcast live on Indian television channels.
All guests of the ceremony were presented with traditional Indian scarves made of khadi fabric. Mahatma Gandhi himself wove it by hand and encouraged people to wear clothes made from rough linen instead of clothes made from factory-made English fabric. Khadi has become a symbol of the struggle against British colonialism.
Mahatma Gandhi is considered the father of the nation in India. His birthday – October 2 – is a public holiday in his homeland, and in the rest of the world, at the initiative of the UN, it is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
