Lavrov said that Russia has no desire to “ditch” the dollar

Russia has no desire to “ditch” the dollar – it is the United States that ceases to provide the role of its currency, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Of course, we are building our line not against the United States, not against the West. We don’t want to ruin the dollar. The United States ceases to provide the role of the dollar, which was acceptable to everyone,” Lavrov said at a meeting with students and faculty of MGIMO.

Lavrov also noted that the course of the West, which is trying to “slow down the course of history”, can only bring “only additional confrontational situations” and difficulties for the world community.

The minister said that the military operation in Ukraine, which has been carried out by Russia since February 2022, gave impetus to the establishment of “justice and multipolarity”. “I came up with it under the leadership of the United States and imposes it on everyone,” he clarified.

Against the backdrop of sanctions, Russia began to move away from settlements in dollars and increasingly use national currencies. In March, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia and China are “increasingly” using national currencies in mutual trade. According to him, two-thirds of the trade turnover between the countries is already “carried out in rubles and yuan.” At the same time, Putin supported the use of yuan in settlements between the Russian Federation and the countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

In May Lavrov declaredthat the transition to national currencies in trade will have a healing effect on the world economy. He noted that the share of the dollar is “consistently decreasing” and the development of mutual settlements in national currencies is an “objective process.”
