“We had no choice but to launch a special military operation,” he said.
The minister explained that direct military threats to the security of the Russian Federation were created right on the Russian borders, and those territories of Ukraine that were supposed to receive a special status as part of a single one began to be subjected to repeatedly intensified shelling.
“In fact, dozens of people were killed there every day. “To protect these people who live on the lands where their ancestors lived for centuries, where the ancestors of these Russian people built cities, roads, ports, churches, we did not have the right to throw them to the fascists,” Lavrov said.
At the same time, Russia will respond to all serious proposals for a peaceful settlement, he noted.

Russia’s special operation in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. Putin called its goals the protection of the residents of Donbass, as well as the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. During the special operation, Russian troops took full control of the LPR, as well as most of the DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. Subsequently, these territories became part of Russia.
