From February 7 to 9, Sergey Lavrov visited Mali, Mauritania and Sudan, and earlier, from January 23 to 27, he visited South Africa, Eswatini (formerly the country was called Swaziland), Angola and Eritrea.

On February 11, the Associated Press reported that the Sudanese authorities had completed the revision of an agreement with Russia to establish a naval base in the Red Sea. According to local officials, the military agreed to its deployment after Lavrov’s visit to the country, as Moscow complied with unnamed conditions set by Khartoum to reach an agreement. The Russian minister spoke in Khartoum with his Sudanese counterpart Ali As-Sadeq and Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
