Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Sudan on February 9. In his capital, Khartoum, he completed his second African tour since the beginning of the year, the press service of the Foreign Ministry said. Lavrov met with Chairman of the country’s Sovereign Council and de facto head of state Abdel Fattah al-Burkhan, his deputy Muhammad Hamdan Daglo, and Foreign Minister Ali al-Sadiq. Sergey Lavrov last visited the country in 2014.
Along the coast of Sudan in the north of the Red Sea, the main cargo flow from Asia to Europe passes through the Suez Canal. In December 2020, Russia and the current Sudanese authorities agreed to deploy a logistics center for the Russian Navy on the coast of the country. In 2021, the Sudanese authorities announced their unwillingness to ratify the agreement submitted by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the State Duma for ratification back in July 2021.
