The risks of a global conflict are increasing. This point of view expressed at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“Today the West turns to statutory norms and principles solely in accordance with its geopolitical needs. This inevitably leads to the deterioration of global stability, aggravation of existing and ignition of new levers of tension. The risks of a global conflict are also growing,” said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia insisted and insists on the implementation of all provisions of the UN Charter. He added that the document cannot be accessed selectively. According to the politician, countries must follow the requirements of the charter “in their entirety and interconnection.”
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that in a crisis situation it is especially important to remember the principles of sovereign equality of states, the right of peoples to self-determination, non-interference in internal processes and respect for the territorial integrity of countries.
Earlier at a meeting of the UN Security Council, Special Rapporteur Alice Jill Edwards said that the organization called on the United States to reconsider its decision to send cluster munitions to Ukraine. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights clarified that they sent such a demand to Washington back in July, but never received a response.
