Lavrov and Wang Yi discussed efforts to launch the negotiation process on Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi, head of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, held a meeting on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) events in Jakarta. The conversation was held in a confidential and constructive manner, informs Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
“An exchange of views took place on the current situation around the Ukrainian crisis, attention was paid to assessing the efforts of the international community to launch a peaceful negotiation process in Ukraine,” the message says.
It is noted that Lavrov and Wang Yi highly appreciated the cooperation of the countries “against the background of increased turbulence in the world system.” The parties paid special attention to the process of implementing the agreements that have been reached at the highest political level since the beginning of 2023.
In addition, Lavrov and Wang Yi touched upon the issues of strengthening cooperation between Moscow and Beijing within the framework of the UN, SCO, BRICS, APEC, G20, etc. Both sides expressed their intention to tighten coordination between Russia and China in order to form a “more just and sustainable polycentric world order”, stressed at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
On July 12, Lavrov arrived in Jakarta (Indonesia) to take part in ASEAN events. He will stay in the capital until July 14.
The organization includes ten countries: Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. On July 12, the Foreign Ministers of the ASEAN countries held a meeting. Lavrov on the same day Meets with Wang Yi and counterpart from Indonesia Retno Marsudi, Laos – Salemsay Kommasit, as well as with ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Horn.
The Russian Foreign Ministry previously reported that Lavrov would also take part in meetings of the heads of foreign affairs agencies in the Russia-ASEAN format, the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the ASEAN Regional Security Forum (ARF).
