Latvian schools were not ready to abandon the Russian language

Many schools in Latvia were unable to provide schoolchildren with the opportunity to learn a second foreign language, which would be an official language of the European Union or the European Economic Area. Due to a lack of teachers, schools can only offer Russian as a second foreign language. This problem was discussed at a meeting of the Sejm Commission on Education, Culture and Science, reported “Latvian Radio 4”.
Schools that offer Russian as the only option for a second foreign language account for approximately 44% of the total number. This displeases not only government agencies, but also supposedly many parents, Latvian Radio reports.
“The gradual transition is planned to begin from the 5th grade, from September 1, 2026 and end on September 1, 2030. Accordingly, the 2030/31 academic year will be the year when this transition will be ensured. Of course, for this to be possible, additional teachers are needed. Now we expect that there are 350-400 teachers. Mainly over these years it would be necessary to train teachers of German, French or Spanish,” the radio quotes the head of the Ministry of Education and Science, Ilze Seipule.
Former Minister of Economy and Seimas deputy Ilze Indriksone categorically disagreed with these deadlines – she believes that the transition should be carried out much faster, in 2026. As a result, the commission postponed consideration of the issue for another two weeks, Latvian Radio 4 reports.
