From July 4, Latvia will resume limited acceptance of applications from Russian citizens for visas. About it reported at the country’s foreign ministry.
“After assessing the security situation and consulting with neighboring countries and regional partners, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will resume limited acceptance of visa applications from Russian citizens at Latvian diplomatic and consular missions abroad from July 4, 2023,” the ministry said in a statement.
Applications will be accepted from family members of citizens of Latvia, the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland. Persons whose visit to Latvia is related to humanitarian reasons, for example, participation in a funeral or the presence of a security threat, can also apply for a visa.
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that in each case the application will be evaluated separately, so it is necessary to have documents confirming that the person belongs to the above categories.
Since June 26, Latvia has stopped accepting applications from Russian citizens for issuing any type of visa “due to the unpredictable development of domestic political events.” The authorities took this decision against the backdrop of an attempted military mutiny by the founder of Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin, who on June 24 took control of Rostov-on-Don and sent columns with fighters towards Moscow. However, by the end of the day, the Kremlin reported on the agreements reached with the founder of the PMC to de-escalate the situation. Prigozhin announced the return of fighters and equipment to field camps. The criminal case of a military rebellion initiated against him was terminated.
