The Latvian Seimas in its final reading supported the amendments prohibiting Russian vehicles from participating in road traffic if they are not registered in Latvia. About it reported on the website of the Latvian Parliament.

According to the amendments, the car must be registered or exported from Latvia no later than February 14, 2024. If, after this period, it is discovered that an unregistered vehicle is involved in road traffic, it will be confiscated and transferred to Ukraine. There are also fines for violation.

A car registered in Russia will be able to move around Latvia only if it is in transit. Transit through Latvia must be completed within 24 hours. Before entering Latvia, you must provide information about the vehicle and its driver using the electronic services of the Latvian Road Safety Directorate.

An exception will be made for cars belonging to diplomatic and consular services. The amendments come into force on November 15.

On September 12, Latvia and Lithuania stopped allowing cars with Russian license plates through. On September 13, Estonia introduced a similar ban (making an exception for buses, motorcycles and diplomats’ cars), and on September 15, Finland. Poland was the last to join the restrictions – on September 17. Thus, all EU border countries have closed the entry of Russians by car.

Bans on the entry of Russian cars began to be introduced after the European Commission clarified the rules for applying existing sanctions on September 8, indicating that entry into EU countries with personal cars registered in the Russian Federation will be regarded as prohibited import.
