Latvia has announced its readiness to completely close its borders with Russia and Belarus

Latvia may close its borders with the Russian Federation and Belarus in the event of a massive increase in illegal migrants who seek to enter the country. This scenario is described in a press release published following a meeting between Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
The parties discussed the possibility of hybrid attacks on the border of Latvia and Belarus. Rinkevičs informed his interlocutor that Riga is ready to take all necessary measures. Among them are the closure of borders with Belarus and Russia with the caveat “in the event of a massive influx of migrants.”
On August 9, the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers again extended the state of emergency in force in the country’s border regions with Belarus for three months – until November 10. Since August 11, 2021, as the country’s border guards reported, more than 6.5 thousand attempts to illegally cross the border have been prevented.
