Latvia may close its borders with Russia and Belarus in the event of a massive increase in illegal migrants. About it reported in the office of the Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics.
“During the conversation, the parties also discussed the possibility of hybrid attacks on the Latvian border from Belarus. Rinkēvičs expressed the position that Latvia is ready to take all necessary measures, including closing the border with Belarus and Russia, especially in cases of a massive influx of migrants,” the statement said.
September 19 government of the republic announced on the closure of one of the checkpoints on the border with Belarus. It was clarified that the work of the Pyaternieki checkpoint on the border of Latvia and Belarus will continue. According to the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers, in September, border guards prevented 1,773 attempts to enter the republic, and in August, a total of 1,615 such attempts were prevented.
The Baltic countries and Poland are wary of the Wagner PMC fighters in Belarus, who have been stationed in the republic since the end of June. On August 28, the countries called on Belarus in a joint statement to expel the PMC.
In addition, cars registered in Russia are currently prohibited from entering the Baltic countries. This happened after the September publication of clarifications from the European Commission (EC) on the import of Russian vehicles into EU countries. According to the document, Russian transport, regardless of whether it is used for private or commercial purposes, can be arrested.
