President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov signed a law ratifying an agreement with Russia on the creation of a unified regional air defense (air defense) system. This was reported by the press service of the head of the republic on Facebook (part of Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

“The creation of a unified regional air defense system between Kyrgyzstan and Russia will ensure more reliable protection of the airspace of both countries. This will also enhance security and protection of national interests,” it said.

Ratification of the agreement confirms Bishkek’s commitment to strengthening strategic relations with Moscow, and also promotes cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense and security.

The Russian government approved the draft agreement on a joint air defense system with Kyrgyzstan prepared by the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July 2022. In August of the same year, the agreement was signed in Moscow. In accordance with it, Kyrgyzstan will allocate 5 hectares of land to Russia free of charge for the duration of the agreement for the deployment of Russian forces. The agreement was concluded for five years with the possibility of automatic extension for similar periods if there are no objections from the parties. In May 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed law about its ratification.

On October 11, on the eve of Putin’s visit, the Kyrgyz parliament considered and adopted a bill to ratify the agreement. The site, it was clarified in parliament, will be allocated next to the Russian airbase in the city of Kant.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov named The agreement with Kyrgyzstan on a unified air defense system was a great achievement. “This is very important, given that Russia and Kyrgyzstan, in addition to allied relations, we are also part of many common integration associations,” he said on October 12.

On October 12, negotiations between Putin and Japarov took place in Bishkek. The leaders of the two countries also took part in an event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Russian military air base in Kant. On October 13, Putin will take part in a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS.
