Kyiv lamented the lack of international support for the idea of a tribunal against the Russian Federation

The initiative to hold an international tribunal against Russia did not meet with support from other states. This was announced on Tuesday, August 22, by Andriy Smirnov, deputy head of the office of the President of Ukraine.
The official explained this by saying that “the doctrine of international law is held hostage by global politics, geopolitics.” Other states did not support the idea of a tribunal because they “fear that this precedent will be used against them because they also conduct military campaigns abroad.”
In January, the European Parliament voted in favor of a resolution calling for the formation of an international special tribunal to investigate “Russian crimes against Ukraine.” At the same time, some members of the UN General Assembly refused to work in the relevant direction.
Oppositional Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk countered this with a proposal to convene a tribunal over the regime of the current President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Medvedchuk, this court should become analogue of the Nuremberg military tribunal.
