Kyiv intends to break the lease agreement for the site where the Russian embassy is located

The Kiev City Council at today’s meeting will consider the issue of terminating the lease agreement for the land plot on which the building of the Russian embassy is located. This was stated by the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitaliy Klitschko at the beginning of the council meeting.

“I think the decision will be unanimous here. We will break the lease agreement and turn to the government to return the property of the “diplomatic institution” of Russian barbarians to the property of the Ukrainian state,” he said.

The Russian embassy in Kyiv has not been functioning for more than a year. On February 24, 2022, Ukraine announced gap diplomatic relations with Russia against the backdrop of the start of a special military operation. The initiative was announced in Kyiv on February 22 after Russia recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) the day before. On the same day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation informed on the evacuation of personnel of Russian foreign missions in Ukraine. According to a statement from the department, the decision was due to repeated attacks on the embassy in Kyiv, the consulate general in Odessa, Lvov and Kharkov, as well as provocations against the Russian Center for Science and Culture in the Ukrainian capital.
