Kyiv did not allow Hungary to send Ukrainian grain to Sudan

Kyiv has still not given permission to use the 3 million euros allocated by Hungary in 2022 for the delivery of grain from Ukraine to Sudan. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated this on the M1 TV channel.

In 2022, the Hungarian government has allocated about 3.5 million euros to transport 10,000 tons of grain from Ukraine to solve the food crisis in Sudan. “Although this money was allocated by Hungarian taxpayers last year, not only not a single ton, but not a single gram of grain was sent to Sudan as part of the Grain from Ukraine program,” noted Szijjarto on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (quote from TASS).

According to the minister, Budapest has not yet received permission from Kyiv to use these funds. Szijjártó points out “the absurdity of the situation with Ukrainian grain” and that “transnational companies are trying to make a serious profit.” According to the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, the Ukrainian agricultural business is trying to flood the markets of Central Europe with grain, which in turn harms local farmers. Moreover, such actions do not help solve the food crisis in Africa and the Middle East, he added.

On the TV channel, Szijjártó noted that he plans to raise this problem at a meeting with colleagues in New York, which will be dedicated to Sudan.

On September 15, the European Commission lifted restrictions on the import of Ukrainian grain to Eastern European countries. Ukraine agreed to introduce legal measures within 30 days to prevent the uncontrolled release of grain onto the market. Despite the EC’s decision, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia extended the embargo.

September 18 Ukraine filed claims to the World Trade Organization (WTO) against these countries. According to Ukraine, its neighbors have “violated their international obligations” and are not coordinating their trade policies with the EU, introducing unilateral restrictions.
