Earlier today, Assad laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden and honored the memory of the soldiers with a moment of silence, reported agency TASS. The ceremony was accompanied by the Military Exemplary Guard of Honor Band. A delegation of Syrian politicians and military also took part in it.

Putin last met with Assad in Moscow in September 2021. Then the Russian leader congratulated the Syrian president on his election victory. The Presidents also discussed the political situation in Syria, the fight against international terrorism and issues of humanitarian cooperation. In particular, Putin expressed concern about the presence of foreign armed forces on the territory of the republic without a UN decision and without the sanction of Assad.

In early February 2023, Putin and Assad spoke by phone after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The Russian president expressed his condolences in connection with the consequences of the natural disaster and offered assistance to the Syrian side, which Assad accepted. As a result, rescuers from the Russian Emergencies Ministry went to the republic.
