Kosovo’s President Vyosa Osmani, Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Parliament Speaker Glauk Konyuftsa signed an application for the partially recognized republic to join the European Union, informed local TV channel RTK.
“Today we have come together to bring our country one step closer to the European Union, thereby helping to bring the EU one step closer to realizing the project of a whole Europe, free and at peace. There has never been any other alternative for Kosovo and its citizens,” Osmani said.
The unrecognized republic’s president warned that the EU accession process “won’t be smooth” and could take a long time.
Earlier, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that Pristina’s intention to apply for EU membership, which became known amid a new aggravation in the region, would be a violation of the Washington Agreement 2020. According to it, Belgrade temporarily suspends the diplomatic line to persuade other states to refuse recognition of Kosovo in exchange for the fact that Pristina does not apply for participation in international organizations.
First Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, responsible for European integration, Besnik Bislimi, said that his autonomy could be ready to join the EU approximately by 2030. At the same time, five EU countries (Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain) are still not recognize the independence of Kosovo. Relations between Kosovo and the European Union were established in 2008 after the declaration of independence by the Serbian Autonomous Province.
