“Finnish politicians seem to have completely lost their fear”

Finland, Russia’s northern neighbor, may soon become a country on whose territory NATO (read American) nuclear weapons will be deployed. This is with reference to sources in the Foreign Ministry, writes the Finnish edition of Iltalehti. Moreover, according to the publication, such a “nuclear” decision may come into force immediately after the admission of Finland to the North Atlantic Alliance in the very near future.

What can and should be Russia’s response to the appearance of nuclear weapons directly at its northwestern borders? Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, told MK about this.

– The fact that the Finns, within the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance program, undertake obligations to deploy nuclear weapons, – the expert clarifies, – first of all, indicates that they have inadequate foreign policy planning. And, secondly, that they really lost fear.

Of course, with any option for deploying NATO infrastructure on the territory of Finland, and I’m not talking about nuclear weapons, Finland is clearly becoming an object and potential target for our possible strike, including a nuclear one, in the event that NATO, from its territories, follows aggression. This will happen automatically.

– The flight time of Finnish bombers with nuclear bombs to such a target as St. Petersburg is a matter of minutes. It turns out that we are getting storage facilities for American tactical nuclear weapons near our borders?

– Finland buys several dozen American fifth-generation F-35 fighters – carriers of nuclear weapons. This means that in the event of a military conflict, the Finns, as an integral part of NATO, can launch a tactical nuclear strike against the North-West of Russia.

– What should we do? Strengthen our military grouping in our Northwest?

– No direct amplification required. However, we will talk about the fact that part of the means of our nuclear triad – which one, this will already be determined by the General Staff – should be redirected to nuclear bases and nuclear weapons carriers on the other side of the border in order to possibly fend off threats from Finnish territory.

– Which of our weapons will have to solve this problem?

– It can be, for example, our Topol-M or Yars mobile ground-based missile systems. Or nuclear carriers on Finnish territory may become a target for some of our naval strategic assets with their intercontinental ballistic missiles.

It will also be important to consider the distance here. But in any case – and there can be no doubt – if strikes can be launched from the territory of Finland on the territory of Russia, then our response may involve not only tactical measures, but also a strategic nuclear component.

In this case, we are talking about a hypothetically possible scenario. But we must talk about such scenarios, as Finnish planners and politicians seem to have come to believe in their own invulnerability.

Do you think they should be afraid of us?

– Not. The main thing for us here is not to frighten anyone, not to draw any “red lines”, but the Finns should know about our response capabilities. And take them into account when making some military decisions. That is why the flight missions of our nuclear missiles should include targets on the Finnish territory of the corresponding facilities with nuclear weapons carriers and ammunition – exactly from the moment these NATO facilities appear on the land of Suomi.
