Kommersant: the Cabinet of Ministers may extend increased duties on wine

The government plans to extend increased import duties on wine from unfriendly countries. About it reports Kommersant citing a source close to the Cabinet of Ministers.

An interlocutor close to the government said that raising import duties on beer from a number of countries is also being discussed. At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers sees the risks of retaliatory complications in the supply of hops to the Russian Federation.
From August 1 the government increased import duties on wines from the USA, EU countries, Australia and other unfriendly countries almost doubled – from 12.5% to 20%, but not less than $1.5 per 1 liter. The measure was introduced until the end of 2023. In July, the Ministry of Energy expected that the wine market, after increasing duties, would be saturated with domestic producers and imports from friendly and neutral countries.
Kommersant, citing data from market participants, writes that in August 2023, imports of all wines decreased by 30% year-on-year and by 32.5% compared to July, to 30.7 million liters. In particular, supplies of still and sparkling wines from Italy in August decreased by 45% year-on-year, to 8.41 million liters, from Spain – by 38% to 3.86 million liters, from France – by 25% to 2.36 million liters
At the same time, in the first eight months of 2023, 282.55 million liters of wine were supplied to Russia, which is 28% more than a year earlier. Among imported still wines, the share of Georgian products was 19.4%. Another 18.4% of imports came from Italy, and 16.9% from Spain. Italy accounted for 71.5% of the supply of sparkling wines excluding champagne.
