“Kommersant” learned about the upcoming rejection of the iPhone in the presidential administration

Until the end of March, employees of the internal political bloc of the presidential administration (AP) need to get rid of the iPhone. About it writes “Kommersant” with reference to sources who were present at the seminar in the Moscow region, where the instruction was given.
Such a decision, the interlocutors of the publication say, was made for security reasons – allegedly Apple gadgets are more susceptible to hacking and espionage by Western countries compared to other smartphones.
According to one of the interlocutors, a discussion arose among the seminar participants about the need for such a measure. Sergei Kiriyenko, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration (AP) of Russia, put an end to the discussion, setting the deadline for the implementation of the instruction – April 1.
Another interlocutor of the newspaper, who was aware of the implementation of this order, admitted that the purchase of new “safe” smartphones for the staff of the Presidential Administration would be carried out by the Kremlin. Another source close to the Presidential Administration said that the ban on the use of Apple gadgets could also affect officials involved in domestic politics in regional administrations.
One of the interlocutors clarified that instead of the iPhone, the AP employees were offered to buy smartphones with the Android operating system, its Chinese counterparts or the Russian Aurora (developed by Open Mobile Platform, a subsidiary of PJSC “Rostelecom“).
The ban on Apple gadgets is not the first technology recommendation the federal government has made to officials. In June 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko gave an instruction to the head of the Ministry of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev to transfer the heads of regions to Russian messengers. The plans were to abandon not only Telegram and WhatsApp, but also replace Google Docs cloud software, a mail service Microsoft Exchange, etc. In particular, at the end of June, employees of the Ministry of Economic Development banned to use foreign video communication services Skype and Zoom and offered to switch to domestic Trueconf and VKTeam.
