Woodworking enterprises in Russia are faced with a shortage of phenolic formaldehyde resin, which is a key component in the production of plywood. About it informed Kommersant with reference to market participants.
“If the situation does not change, then by mid-May, most enterprises in the industry may stop working,” the Association of Furniture and Woodworking Industries reported.
In this regard, the association applied to the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry with a proposal to limit the export of phenol and resolve the issue with the supply of this component. According to the head of the association, Timur Irtuganov, the shortage of phenol is due to the fact that the production of the component has decreased, while its supplies abroad have not. Sveza, the largest plywood manufacturer, reported that the shortage of phenol became especially noticeable in April.
In addition to plywood manufacturers, pulp and fiberglass enterprises also faced a shortage of phenol. The shortage of formaldehyde resin was also reported by Technikol, a manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing materials.
Irtuganov noted that the situation that has arisen is a force majeure, since earlier the phenol shortage was seasonal. The Ministry of Industry and Trade noted that it was decided to increase the production of phenol in April and May following the growth in demand.
