Klishas announced the impossibility of returning the death penalty in Russia without the adoption of a new Constitution

The return of the death penalty in Russia will be possible only if a new Constitution is adopted, said Andrey Klishas, ​​head of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council. This is how he reacted to the proposal of the leader of A Just Russia – For Truth, Sergei Mironov, to introduce capital punishment for terrorists and murderers of children.

“Here they are going to ‘insist on the introduction of the death penalty for murderers of children and terrorists,’ I would like to understand the action plan of the initiators of the return of the death penalty,” Mr. Klishas wrote in his Telegram channel. The senator referred to the position of the chairman of the Constitutional Court of Russia, Valery Zorkin, who considers the adoption of a new fundamental law in the Russian Federation the only way to return the death penalty.

Earlier, Sergei Mironov, in an interview with RIA Novosti, said that his party calls for the introduction of “execution” as a punishment for terrorists and their accomplices, as well as for murderers of children. The politician referred to “opinion poll data”, according to which the return of the death penalty is supported by about 70% of Russians.

December 8 Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev offered “overcome the moratorium” on the death penalty for saboteurs. Then Mr. Klishas, ​​commenting on the words of the politician, also noted that a return to the death penalty in Russia under the current Constitution is impossible.

Later the senator likewise answered and to the proposals of the authorities of the Zaporozhye region on the return of capital punishment in the new territories of Russia. According to him, such initiatives directly contradict the Constitution.
