Kissinger called the neutral status of Ukraine by resolving the conflict

The American magazine Foreign Affairs published an article about a new book by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger “Leadership: Six Lessons of World Strategy”, in which he calls Ukraine’s neutral status the way to end the conflict.
Kissinger explores the ability of 20th century world leaders to cope with circumstances and profoundly change the course of history. The politician calls Russia a “former superpower”, but emphasizes that it will remain an influential country for decades. He explained that because of its vast territory and lack of geographic protection, Russia suffers from a “constant sense of insecurity.” In this regard, he recalls the famous saying of Catherine the Great: “I have no other way to protect my borders than to expand them.”
According to Kissinger, Russia cannot allow Ukraine to join NATO, because then the borders of the alliance will be 500 km from Moscow, which will eliminate the strategic depth. In this regard, Kissinger suggests that the solution to the ongoing Ukrainian conflict lies in Kyiv’s refusal to join NATO and Ukraine’s neutral status. However, there is still a blank spot in this formula – how Ukraine’s security will be guaranteed.
