Kissinger called NATO’s signals to Ukraine about joining the alliance a mistake

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in an interview with The Wall Street Journal touched upon the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO. He noted that he assigned her a different role.
As Kissinger emphasized, he always believed that Poland, and other countries that have always been part of the West, should be in NATO. However, Ukraine, in his opinion, should have been like Finland, that is, outside the bloc.
“It was a mistake on the part of NATO to give signals about the possibility of joining,” he said, speaking about the relationship between Ukraine and the alliance. Kissinger also believes that NATO and the West as a whole should have taken seriously the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he expressed concern about security issues.
The former secretary of state added that some Ukrainians would disagree with him, but in his opinion, Ukraine is a set of territories that gravitate towards Russia and which Russia considers its own.
At the same time, Kissinger added that after the start of the special operation, the situation has changed and now, one way or another, when the conflict is over, Ukraine should be treated as a member of NATO.
