Kirby: US did not get consular access to Gershkovich

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US has not yet received consular access to The Wall Street Journal’s American correspondent Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in Russia on charges of espionage.
Kirby noted that despite all “persistent” attempts to gain access, this was not achieved. He added that everyone, including US President Joe Biden, was following the case and promised that Washington would do everything possible to bring Gershkovich home.
Recall that after the detention of Gershkovich, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the journalist would be granted consular access, in accordance with internal procedures. Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya also noted that, according to consular and diplomatic traditions, access will be granted, but it will be up to the Russian authorities to decide on the time and stage of granting.
