Kirby: The White House is disappointed with Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Treaty

Russia completed its withdrawal from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) on November 7, a move that disappointed Washington. John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the White House National Security Council, said Moscow has left the United States no choice but to also withdraw from the treaty.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin signed the corresponding law, and the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the decision to withdraw from the CFE Treaty became inevitable after Finland joined NATO and the procedures for admitting Sweden to the alliance.
Moscow claims that these steps by NATO were the “last straw” and made it impossible to reach an agreement on arms control with NATO countries, since they “clearly demonstrated their inability to negotiate.”
In response to Russia’s decision to withdraw from the CFE Treaty, NATO countries announced their intention to suspend their participation in this treaty.
