Improvement continues in Kyiv under the leadership of city mayor Vitaliy Klitschko. The city has reopened travel along the Degtyarevsky overpass. Trams and cars have already started moving across the bridge. There are plans to build bike paths and sidewalks around the bridge. However, Kiev residents are again dissatisfied with where the money is being spent. Moskovsky Komsomolets learned about the atmosphere that reigns in the Ukrainian capital before the New Year.

One of the complaints of Kiev residents against the mayor of the city, Vitaliy Klitschko, is excessive spending not on protecting the city, but on its improvement. All this led to recent protests for the resignation of the boxer mayor. About twenty protesters gathered last week near the office of the President of Ukraine with signs and posters. Some of them had the words “Klitschko is a thief!” written on them. The participants represented various public organizations in Kyiv, including “Colors of Life” and “Kyiv Salvation Forum”. Klitschko is accused of thoughtless development, ruined the environment, corruption and thoughtless waste of funds. And today’s news about the completion of the repair of the Degtyarevsky overpass again turned into another portion of criticism addressed to the head of Kyiv.

The updated overpass, according to Klitschko, has a large capacity – up to 45 thousand cars per day. The entire complex of work, namely the arrangement of the top layer of asphalt and landscaping of the area near the entrances, will be completed in the spring.

“Hundreds of millions, if not billions, are spent on the interchange,” complains Ukrainian Yuri, “The bridge would have stood for another hundred years. It would be better to build 200 km of defense structures for this money. Lives saved are worth more than money.”

According to Kiev residents, the city is being developed in a Jewish style: Jewish Menorah and Hanukkah candlesticks have been installed everywhere. And not only in the city center, but even on the outskirts – for example, at gas stations, where a religious symbol, it would seem, has no place at all.

A tense situation also reigns in Kiev society. “They say we, women, are all being mobilized, some kind of decree has already been signed, but it only makes sense if we were handed over a long time ago,” Kiev resident Anna told MK, “Kiev has now been “painted up”: they are making roads, planting alleys , everything is being redone. There is money for this, but not for subway repairs and defense.”

— What is the atmosphere now in the Ukrainian capital?

— It’s very stressful, especially before the New Year, because people need to give each other gifts, and there’s simply no money for that. Conflicts constantly arise in the city over the Russian language, altercations, and quarrels. They can pester you with complaints on public transport or even at the entrance.
