“According to the decision of the President, the Thunder units in the center and in the localities are transferred to the National Guard along with the staff and the entire infrastructure. All employees of Grom (with their desire) are being transferred to serve in the National Guard, ”the deputy wrote in his Telegram channel.
Mr. Khinshtein noted that when integrating into the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of Grom did not exceed 2.7 thousand people, and now it is 7 thousand, which exceeds the total number of SOBR fighters (about 5 thousand). In April 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs explained the increase in the number of “Thunder” by “the operational situation associated with the conduct of a special military operation.”
July 4 newspaper “Vedomosti” informed about the imminent transfer of “Thunder” to the National Guard. According to the publication, preparations for the reassignment began after President Vladimir Putin met with the leadership of the Ministry of Defense, the National Guard, the FSB, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSO. These departments, according to the head of state, “provided order and legality during the rebellion” PMC “Wagner” on June 23-24.
Vedomosti’s sources in law enforcement reported that Grom’s fighters were not happy with their transfer to the Russian Guard, since “many of them appreciate the status of police special forces, in which they are spared from additional “drilling” and can interact with operational officers without unnecessary formalities.” At the end of June, according to the Baza Telegram channel, Grom fighters received a salary increase of 50,000 rubles.
The Grom special unit was created in 2003 to conduct security operations of the State Drug Control Service (later the Federal Drug Control Service). Since December 6, 2016, Grom has been operating as part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, their area of responsibility has been expanded across the entire spectrum of police functionality.
