Kenyan authorities ready to implement high-speed rail project to Ethiopia and South Sudan by 2040

Kenya plans to begin construction of a high-speed rail link in 2025 to neighboring Ethiopia and South Sudan. This is reported Bloomberg with reference to the Lapsset Corridor Development Authority, an agency that is implementing a large-scale infrastructure project in the region.
The project involves the construction of 3,000 km of electrified railroads that will link the new seaport at Lamu and the city of Isiolo in central Kenya, after which the road will branch into three directions: to the capital cities of Addis Ababa, Juba and Nairobi. The cost of building such a high-speed line is estimated at $13.8 billion.
The Kenyan authorities have been planning the creation of HSR in the country since the 1970s, several projects have been developed for half a century, but none of them have even begun to be implemented. The current project is part of the government’s Vision 2030 program and the large-scale infrastructure project Lapsset Corridor Program, which also includes the construction of a seaport, highways, oil pipelines, three airports and three resort towns. Actually, the construction of the first high-speed line, which will connect the capitals of Kenya and Ethiopia, will be completed just around 2030. And the Kenyan authorities hope to build a new railway to South Sudan only by 2040.
