Claims that Kazakhstan, through its actions to release water into reservoirs, could influence the flood situation in Russia are untrue. This statement was made on Wednesday, April 10, by the press service of the Kazakhstan Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Earlier, the plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Ural Federal District, Vladimir Yakushev, said that the flood situation in the regions of Russia was extremely unfavorable, including due to the actions of neighboring Kazakhstan. The politician recalled such a factor as the reservoir system and stated that “there is something to work out in this regard with our colleagues so that the release of this water from reservoirs is more coordinated.”

In response, Kazakhstan recalled that water along the Tobol River comes from Russia, and decisions on water discharges are made based on incoming flows. Therefore, it is incorrect to say that it is Kazakhstan that influences floods in Russia, the Kazakh agency summarized.

The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation Alexander Kurenkov listed a number of reasons for the flood: waterlogging of the soil in the previous autumn, its freezing in winter, significant snow reserves, sharp spring warming and heavy precipitation.
