Kazakh Foreign Ministry announces work with US to avoid secondary sanctions

Kazakhstan is working closely with the United States on issues related to preventing businesses or industries from falling under secondary sanctions, said Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi.
“The American side, we are grateful, informs us in advance about possible cases on which secondary sanctions may be applied. As of today, we do not have a single Kazakh company or sector that would be under secondary sanctions,” Tleuberdi said (quote according to RIA Novosti).
The head of the Foreign Ministry said earlier that Kazakhstan would not help Russia bypass Western sanctions. According to the diplomat, Astana and Moscow have close economic ties, so the sanctions imposed against Russia had a negative impact on the economy of Kazakhstan.
In April 2022, Timur Suleimenov, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan, also stated that Astana would not help Moscow bypass the sanctions imposed against it by the United States and the EU countries. Suleimenov then noted that it was important for Kazakhstan to demonstrate to European partners that the country would not become Russia’s instrument in circumventing sanctions.
