Kaliningrad governor Alikhanov proposed to load goods from ferries to trains “in manual mode”

The governor of the Kaliningrad region, Anton Alikhanov, believes that cargo from ferries should be “manually transferred to the railroad” and bulk carriers to stabilize transit to the region. His proposal concerns cement, rolled metal products and other goods that can be transported by bulk carriers.

“If necessary, continue to manually transfer cargo from ferries to railways, this also applies to cement, and the reorientation of rolled metal products, and other goods that can be transported on bulk carriers, because they are not loaded, unlike the ferry line. And yet, to bring the experiment on the transportation of exclusively trailers by those companies that are ready for this, which are engaged in road transportation, ”said Mr. Alikhanov at a government meeting (quoted from “Prime”).

The head of the Baltic Metalworking Cluster, Oleg Chernov, said that the situation with the Ust-Luga-Baltiysk ferry crossing in the direction of Kaliningrad worsened in March: there is not enough ferry capacity for the needs of metalworkers. According to him, suppliers of building materials are also experiencing problems with transportation on ferries. He also drew attention to the increased cost of ferry transportation in general.

In January, one of the ferries designed to transport railway cars and cars, the 1984 Baltiysk, was sent for repairs. In this regard, queues of cars formed in the port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad Region.

In June 2022, Lithuania banned the transit of Russian goods by rail through its territory. Since then, cargo has been delivered to the region by sea on 19 ships.
