“Just a coincidence” – Kommersant FM

The Kremlin said that the government, in particular the Ministry of Agriculture, is working energetically to reduce egg prices. According to Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, the “accelerating effect of the Direct Line” also played a role in stabilizing the situation. The result, of course, will be achieved, but not immediately. According to experts, most likely the product will become cheaper after the New Year. Kommersant FM political commentator Dmitry Drize also believes that victory over prices will ultimately be achieved.

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Sergeevich Peskov, during his next communication with the press, briefly explained how the market economy works. A rather unexpected misfortune befell Russia – chicken eggs suddenly became more expensive, a rush of demand arose, queues formed, and in some places the products disappeared completely.

Why did this happen? This is due to a combination of factors. Either the Russians have become rich, or, on the contrary, they have become poorer. But, be that as it may, the issue has now been resolved, and at the highest level, measures have been taken. In particular, the authorities have zeroed out import duties.

Fortunately, there are friendly countries that are ready to supply us with this product. First of all, this is Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran seems to be ready to join in as well. So we will not be left without eggs, the world is not without good people.

But let’s return to Dmitry Peskov. According to him, the market economy is structured in such a way that eggs cannot be ordered to become cheaper overnight. It has been officially promised that the price reduction will definitely happen, although not immediately. The market must be saturated with this product, and this will happen immediately. But, most likely, only after the New Year. You understand that holiday tables need to be set, so the demand remains quite high. This is the first thing.

And secondly, and this is the main thing, various unconstructive remarks are heard that, supposedly, only after the “Direct Line” with the president and his intervention did the issue move forward. But that’s not true. Measures have been and are being taken, and everything is working effectively. Sometimes such annoying misunderstandings just happen. But this is precisely a misunderstanding, an exception to the rule, and not a consequence of some systemic problems.

At the same time, the average retail price of a dozen eggs in Russia reached a ten-year high this week and amounted to 121.8 rubles. These are the data of Rusprodsoyuz. And another interesting statistic: in 2023, Russians will consume over 42 billion eggs, which is 9% less than actual production volumes. It seems like everything should be fine. But no: billions more eggs are needed for incubation. According to the Rosptitsesoyuz, this is approximately 10% of production.

What is incubation? This is a natural process in the development of egg-laying animals. That is, chickens still need to be raised somehow, however, we won’t go deeper and organize an educational program on poultry farming. Although one cannot help but pay attention to how many different unions and different societies we have, but eggs have not been saved from rising in price.

What’s in the bottom line? Yes, I would like prices to drop immediately. But we understand that this does not happen. There are no wizards in our leadership, and there is no politics in what happened.

It’s just a coincidence, it happens. So there is no need to focus on this. True, you will still have to wait a little, until “after the holidays.”
