The Japanese authorities are discussing the issue of increasing medium-term budget spending on defense to the amount of 40 trillion yen ($287.5 billion), according to the Yomiuri publication.
Currently, this amount is at the level of 27.47 trillion yen ($197.45 billion). At the same time, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Finance differ in their assessments – the military proposes to increase spending to an amount equivalent to $345 billion, while financiers propose to limit it to $251 billion.
In addition, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party believes that total defense spending through fiscal year 2027 should not drop to $287.5 billion.
By the end of 2022, the Japanese authorities must submit three updated documents in the field of defense: the national security strategy, the norms of the national defense program and the medium-term defense program.
Earlier it was reported that the Japanese authorities are studying the possibility of partially classifying the main recommendations of the national defense program. At present, these materials are publicly available, but in the future they will contain information about Japan’s ability to deliver preventive strikes against the enemy. The move is reportedly spearheaded by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, with the support of security and diplomatic experts.
