Japan protests Russia’s suspension of tax treaties

The Japanese authorities sent a protest to Russia in connection with Moscow’s decision to suspend tax agreements with a number of countries, RIA Novosti quotes Hirokazu Matsuno, Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers.
He noted that Tokyo regrets this decision, and the protest was sent through diplomatic channels. Matsuno called Moscow’s move “unfortunate” and “unfair” and said it could be “unfavorable” for Japanese citizens and companies. Today we sent a protest to the Russian side through diplomatic channels demanding the cancellation of this decision,” he said.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the suspension of certain clauses of tax treaties with 38 unfriendly countries. Japan is one of those countries. The Decree suspends the main rules of the tax treaties that regulate the taxation of movable and immovable property, dividends, interest, income from services and copyrights, fees and income from employment, as well as the taxation of capital. The same applies to tax incentives and non-discriminatory rules for taxpayers. At the same time, provisions on the elimination of double taxation remain in effect.
