Japan protests China over record ship stays in Senkaku Islands

Japanese government secretary general Hirokazu Matsuno said at a press conference on Monday that the Japanese government considers it unacceptable for Chinese ships to enter the area near the disputed Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands, which Tokyo regards as its territorial waters.
Matsuno noted that during the last entry of Chinese patrol ships into these waters between December 22 and 25, the ships were there for a record amount of time. According to the Secretary General of the Cabinet, the PRC ships stayed in Japanese territorial waters for 72 hours and 45 minutes, and this is the longest period of all time. Matsuno considered the incident “regrettable and unacceptable”.
In addition, he added that if Chinese ships enter the area and stay in the adjacent zone, Tokyo protests through diplomatic channels demanding to leave this zone.
