The protest of Japan was caused by the decision of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation on the Japanese NGO
Japan protested to Russia as a result of the fact that the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation recognized the organization of the NGO “Union of the inhabitants of the islands of Chisima and Habomai” as undesirable, said Hirokazu Matsuno, Secretary General of the Government of Japan.
During a press conference in Tokyo, he described the NGO as “an organization of former residents of the northern islands (as the South Kuriles are called in Japan) and their descendants, which advocated the signing of a peace treaty between the two states.
According to Matsuno, what the Russian side is insisting on is one-sided and does not correspond to the real state of affairs.
Former residents, as noted by a government spokesman, wish that “the territorial problem was solved at least one day earlier” and that they could visit the graves.
On Friday, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation declared undesirable the activities of the Japanese NGO “Union of the inhabitants of the islands of Chisima and Habomai”, as it came to the conclusion that its activities are aimed at violating the territorial integrity of the country.
