Japanese MP Furuya said that the Japanese Parliament may pass a bill to build bomb shelters
Keiji Furuya, an MP from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, said in an interview with Bloomberg that the Japanese parliament could pass a bill next fiscal year that would set a schedule for building bomb shelters in the country in case of armed conflict.
As Furuya noted, Japan did not take part in the war for 77 years, but what the country has since considered “for granted” is no longer true. He stressed that the world has changed a lot. According to the agency, the country’s authorities intend to take the corresponding decision against the backdrop of more frequent launches of North Korean missiles and growing tensions around Taiwan.
Bloomberg pointed out that most houses in Japan do not have basements, and most of the evacuation centers in the country are not underground. At the same time, the agency clarified that in large cities, an extensive metro network can serve as bomb shelters. Furuya added that Japan originally planned to strengthen existing facilities in order to avoid significant budgetary costs.
