Tokyo regrets Russia’s decision to withdraw from the bilateral cooperation agreement for the elimination of nuclear weapons subject to reduction in the Russian Federation. This was stated by the Secretary General of the Government of Japan Hirokazu Matsuno.

“We regret this decision, which was made unilaterally without informing the Japanese side. We intend to confirm the details of what happened through diplomatic channels,” he said (quote according to TASS).

On November 9, the Russian government issued an order to terminate cooperation with Japan on the elimination of nuclear weapons signed Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The Russian Foreign Ministry was also instructed to notify the Japanese side about this.

Moscow and Tokyo entered into an agreement in 1993. Its purpose is to facilitate the safe elimination of nuclear weapons, which Moscow was required to reduce under bilateral or multilateral treaties, as well as in accordance with its unilateral decisions. As part of the agreements, a Committee for Cooperation to Assist in the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was created.
