Japan and Canada are being pulled into AUKUS

History of AUKUS

The association was created on September 15, 2021, when the United States, Britain and Australia entered into a defense partnership agreement. It is believed that the agreement is primarily aimed at containing China in the South China Sea. After the creation of the bloc, Australia began to focus on receiving US nuclear submarines (worth $268 billion until the mid-2050s), breaking a contract with the French company Naval Group for the production of 12 non-nuclear attack submarines (worth about $66 billion). Former Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian called AUKUS an attempt to create an “Asia-Pacific version of NATO” that serves US hegemony and carries a Cold War mentality.
