“It’s humiliating”: Ukrainians angered by Stephen King’s post in support of Kyiv

American writer Stephen King was reproached for his dismissive attitude towards Ukrainians. The reason is the article he used incorrectly before the name of the country.
In a supportive post, King tweeted “the Ukraine”, which contradicts the country’s official name in English, which Kyiv stands for. Ukrainians have long resented such treatment, because, in their opinion, the definite article before the word “Ukraine” casts doubt on state sovereignty. The error implies: Ukraine can only be characterized in terms of its relationship to its larger neighbor, that is, Russia.
“The appeal “the Ukraine” is humiliating for the nation,” user Pavel wrote in the comments.
“It’s correct to write “Ukraine”, not “the Ukraine,” Tatyana also noted, thanking for contacting support.
“You can’t say “the Ukraine”,” another user was indignant, recalling that writers are often used as an example in schools as literate people.
“We don’t say ‘the England’ or ‘the Finland’,” Anna tried to explain.
Meanwhile, there is a theory according to which the article “wormed its way” into the English name of the country from the former name of the republic within the USSR – The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic).
