“We are not going to make a gas plant”, promised the Minister of the Economy, opening the door to an extension of the energy check for the most modest.

After the government announced an extension of the energy tariff shield in 2023, the contours of the future device are becoming clearer. This Tuesday morning, on RMC / BFMTV, Bruno Le Maire thus declared that the protection would be of the same magnitude “for everyone“, confirming also that increases in bills would be expected.

We are not going to build a gas plant. It will be the same principle for everyone. There will be an increase for everyone in the price of gas and electricity, which will be as contained as possible, to the extent that our public finances allow us“said the Minister of the Economy.

There will therefore be, as today, no differentiation of the shield according to household income. “For modest households, there will be the energy check“, indicated Bruno Le Maire. A device which affects 6 million people and whose amount can reach 150 euros, recalled the tenant of Bercy, who opened the door to its enlargement. “Will parliamentarians decide that it has to affect more than 6 million people, that we have to go a little further? It will be part of the discussion with parliamentarians when the budget is examined“, advanced the number 2 of the government.

Without a tariff shield, bills would soar on January 1, 2023, also underlined the Minister of the Economy. On electricity, they would increase on average by 120 euros per month, and by 180 euros per month on gas, he assured. The former LR did not, however, give any details on the extent of the increases to come in 2023 with this probably lightened version of the tariff shield. According to Bercy’s figures, the tariff shield on electricity and gas and fuel discounts have already cost around 24 billion euros.
