“It takes two to tango” – Lavrov on reducing nuclear risks

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow is ready for contacts with Western countries in order to “improve” the situation in Europe and the Euro-Atlantic region, as well as to reduce nuclear risks in the long term.
However, he stressed that “it takes two to tango,” and diplomacy should look for peaceful and politico-diplomatic ways to resolve interstate contradictions and conflicts, including relations between nuclear powers.
In an interview with the Argumenty i Fakty newspaper, Lavrov recalled that Russia offered constructive proposals and came up with pragmatic, non-politicized proposals for resolving urgent international problems. In particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin put forward an initiative in December 2021 to provide Moscow with legally binding security guarantees in the western direction.
Lavrov noted that the Russian authorities are open to contacts only on an equal basis and taking into account Russian interests. The West must abandon its aggressive hostile course in order to succeed in dialogue with Russia.
