Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said during a press conference that the upper house had an agreement with the government, according to which it should develop a new financial and economic model for Russian Post. According to Ms. Matvienko, it is necessary to develop a new model so that Russian Post “does not become feverish.”
“Knowing the situation on the ground, the Federation Council was very alarmed by the situation with Russian Post. It is no coincidence that we raised this topic, because this is such a strategic service for Russia, it connects our entire vast territory,” said Valentina Matvienko. According to her, the government has no right to close post offices in sparsely populated areas, even if it is financially unprofitable. “There must be a post office in every locality or nearby,” she concluded.
The chairman also said that as a result of the audit of the organization, the government “discovered a lot of interesting things.” Ms. Matvienko did not specify what exactly she meant. “I have already had preliminary meetings with the Deputy Prime Minister. We are waiting for a systemic decision from the government so that from next year Russian Post will function smoothly, without failures, and be financially secure,” noted Valentina Matvienko.
On September 25, at a meeting of the Federation Council, chamber speaker Valentina Matvienko said that Russian Post has a growing financial hole and “the situation urgently needs to be corrected.” In response to this, Russian Post CEO Mikhail Volkov explained that the situation at the beginning of 2023 was indeed “extremely difficult.” At the same time, he noted that in six months the organization managed to reduce operating losses by almost three times. According to Russian Post’s RAS reporting, as of June 30, the company’s loss for January-June amounted to 6.6 billion rubles. For the same period in 2022, this figure was 17.7 billion rubles.
